The Artists and their Classes


Tammy Finkler

Tammy Finkler is an award winning quilter. She started quilting 15 years ago. Tammy is a great person to ask about all sorts of quilting machines, as she has owned many. She now finds her favorites are her Gammill Classic Plus and her Optimum Statler Stitcher. The waiting list for her custom quilting is about one year. She loves designing and making whole-cloth quilts with faux trapunto, feathers, flowers and heavy stitching. Two Day New Owner-Statler Stitcher Training- Tammy Finkler

Day-1:  Learn the latest; most effective and beautiful ways to quilt with the computer guided Statler Stitcher.  Among the topics covered in this class are:  selecting appropriate patterns and threads, operation of the software and machine to do borders, edge-to-edge, stitch-in-the-ditch, basting, measuring and squaring the quilt, diagonals/sashing, setting blocks, setting triangles, basic freehand techniques and binding.  Plus loads of helpful “tips and tricks” to get you quilting like a pro.

 

Day-2:  In this hands on class, learn to create basic executable designs for the Statler Stitcher using AutoSketch.  Some of the topics addressed on this day are:  toolbars, macros, default page template setup, snaps, keyboard shortcuts, use of lots of tools, drawing with a continuous line rather than numbering, creating simple block, border and corner patterns, saving files, importing and tracing images, basics for point to point and edge-to-edge patterns.  This class will empower you to create a pattern that is just right for any situation. Freehand Curlicues, Feathers, and Vines- Tammy Finkler

  In this hands-on class, everyone will complete a small quilt while learning freehand techniques to speed up your custom as well as allover quilting jobs. These designs can be used in borders, sashing, blocks, triangles, all-overs, backgrounds, etc.  Cost: $225

 

 

 

Linda Thielfoldt

 Linda has won a many blue ribbons for her quilted garments in the past few years. These ribbons include the blue in wearable art in national competition at the 2002, 2003 and 2006 Machine Quilter's Showcase. She took a blue ribbon at MQX in 2006 and has also won place ribbons at many other national quilt shows in the past few years. Linda brings over 30 years sewing and quilting experience to her classes. In her early 20's she operated a bridal sewing business making custom wedding gowns and accessories but quilting soon took over as her passion so she closed the bridal sewing business and opened The Quilted Goose. For more than 15 years she successfully owned a Marketing and Advertising agency, Devlin Group Inc., and had many corporate clients who relied on her marketing expertise. She has taught quilting for 11 years and loves to share her knowledge of quilting and sewing. Her classes are taught with enthusiasm in a fun, lively, no-rules environment where you will walk out of her class with new ideas and inspiration! The Business of Quilting Lecture - Linda Thielfoldt     

This class is geared to those interested in starting a quilting business as well as those who have already done so, or who are looking to improve their profitability and productivity. Linda has successfully applied her 25 years of business experience and ownership to the longarm quilting industry. She has owned her own advertising/marketing agency, owns a property management company and runs a successful quilting business: The Quilted Goose. Lecture includes useful handouts and examples to help you jump start or revitalize your quilting business. Cost: $50


Fearless Feathers I - Linda Thielfoldt              

Have you always wanted to learn how to sew feathers freehand? Do you cringe when a customer asks you to do a feather in a border? Have you been quilting feathers freehand but wish you had some more creative ideas when it comes to feathers on quilts? Do the feathers you quilt now fall below your expectations? If so, this class is for you! This class will take the student through all the steps necessary to be fearless with those feathers. Using some time-tested techniques and tricks Linda will help take the fear out of feathers. Cost: $225

Custom Sampler Supreme - Linda Thielfoldt
In this full day hands-on class you will learn many ways to handle the different blocks, sashing and borders. A four-block sampler is to be made by the student in preparation for this class. Class supply list with pre-class homework/sampler instructions will be available at time of registering. The sampler can be bound and used as a sample in your studio. Cost: $225

Freehand Feathers IILinda Thielfoldt   

Fearless Feathers I is prerequisite for this class. You have some feathering under your belt and you are ready to explore new ways to use the versatile feather. In this full day hands-on class you will make a whole cloth sampler using several different freehand feather designs. The sampler can be bound and hung in your studio to show off your work. Cathy Franks

Cathy Franks is an international award winning quilt artist. Cathy has been described as being innovative, dedicated and as a person that has an energy level that never quits! Cathy is an informative teacher and is a perfectionist at detail, color and technique. Along with winning many awards, Cathy has appeared on television shows, magazine covers, book covers and special promotion publications. In Cathy’s classes, she will share her secrets on how to avoid mistakes while quilting.  Cathy has been quilting for 30 years, machine quilting for 15 years and long arm quilting since 1993.  Cathy has even made quilts for President George W. I can do THAT on my long arm? - Cathy Franks               

Longarms are for more than just quilting! Beautiful textures can be created quickly with a few simple fabrics and exciting yarns, ribbons and bits of left over fabrics.  I’ll show how to create fringing and flash and trash to cover up raw edges. Create stunning textures by capturing bits and pieces with netting and pleating and floral designs with silk flowers and thread.  Make your own thread appliqués fabric and needle lace to add to your list of what you can do. She will even try to show you how to make the kitchen sink. Cost: $225

Inks and thread painting- Cathy Franks                            

Fabric inks are a great way to add color and splash to your fabric. I’ll show you the easy way to use them. But that’s not the only thing ill show you how to do in this class! Let’s toss in a little thread painting to add details and texture to that design. I’ll show you how to make an object look real by how you blend thread colors and which direction you stitch the thread in. Lots of tips given here so join in! Cost: $225

 

 

Jamie Wallen

Jamie brings his background in fine arts to the longarm world!
He has been quilting since the late 1990's when he began to develop his artistic style of quilting with a large customer following. Eventually, he began mentoring new quilters in his community that, as he says, would get together and troubleshoot where we need to improve as quilters. Later he became friends with Nichole Webb. They collaborated on the book "No Boundaries" which includes Jamie's design "Flurry of Angels." In 2004 Jamie began teaching workshops and classes throughout the United States. Jamie has developed a new series of quilting techniques he calls "Thread Fusion," and continues to teach nationally. In 2006, Jamie's Thread Fusion series will be available in print. Jamie’s studio is in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Jamie says "I've found my home in the quilting community, and I'm going to explore every room!” Visit Jamie’s site at

Mystical Cottontracks: Extending Boundaries in our Freehand Quilting - Jamie Wallen   

In this class we are going to hit the cotton quilting freehand style. Jamie will cover his original all over designs for edge to edge. Included are: Flurry of Angels, Hearts Take Flight, Scrollwork, and many others. We will then take these designs to the high-end custom quilting level with related block and sash designs. Cost: $225

Thread Fusion/ Artistic Delights for every quilter-Jamie Wallen                 

Come Prepared to experience and learn mouth watering arrays of techniques and designs that will make your projects sing. In this class, we will uncover exciting new textures and apply them to new set-ins, sashings and borders.  Participants will also learn outrageous fillers to showcase these unearthly delights. Irena Bluhm

Irena is from rural Oklahoma and took up quilting as a hobby in 2001. Prior to quilting Irena focused on fine art as her hobby.  Irena is an award winning instructor who began teaching classes after just one year of learning to quilt. Irena’s first whole cloth quilt ever made won 12 awards!  Irena focuses on detail and likes to create new quilt patterns and enjoys changing up her style and techniques. Irena has many prestigious awards. Over 35 awards to be exact! Irena even wrote her own book titled “Blooming Background Designs”. Whimsical & Funky Feathers- Irena Bluhm                         

As soon as you learn how to draw, you will know how to sew! A brand new collection of Irena’s Whimsical and Funky Feathers is going to be used in this class to create some really exciting and unique looking quilting designs like: blocks, corners, swags and center medallions. Improve and expand your freehand motion quilting skills and add some new, unique and exciting variety of quilting designs to your repertoire. After Irena shows you how, you will be creating your own designs, using your own creativity and imagination.  If you tell Irena that you can’t draw, she wont believe you. Even if you never drew before, you will be drawing and stitching in this class! You will learn very fast by following just a few easy to understand steps and start creating your own quilting designs using those funky and unique looking feathers. Take your quilting capabilities one notch further by learning this easy to follow technique. Cost- $225

“Lets try to make a Winner- Wholecloth”- Irena Bluhm

Whole cloth design and execution- 2 day workshop. Irena Bluhm is going to provide all patterns, step by step instructions and assistance in design, marking and execution of a whole cloth quilt during this hands-on experience. The students will have enough patterns and will be encouraged to make a few larger quilts later if they wish. Students who finish their class projects or complete other larger projects on their own are going to be encouraged to enter them into competition and share photographs of there masterpieces if they wish. Cost: $450

 

 

Linda McCuean

Linda McCuean is an award winning quilter and instructor. Linda’s quilt “Bella” was recognized as a masterpiece quilt. The whole cloth quilt, winner of the inaugural $100,000 Quilting Challenge, was evaluated at the National Quilting Association’s annual show last year in Columbus, Ohio, where it was officially awarded the status of Masterpiece Quilt – the first longarm-quilted quilt to receive the distinction. Some other awards include “Best in Show” at the Road to California show in 2004 and “Best Machine Quilting” awarded at the Vermont Quilt Festival in 2005. Some other award titles earned by Linda include “Best of Show Bed Quilt”, “Best Machine Quilting” and
“1st Bed Quilt Mixed”.

Tropunto Techniques- Linda McCuean                           

This class is a two day hands on class. This class will explore a variety of techniques to achieve the popular stuffed looks of trapunto. We will begin by discussing how to choose effective quilting designs for trapunto and different combinations of battings and styles of background quilting to create the most drama with your tapunto work. Students will create a variety of trapunto samples that will be useful for future decision making or to show to customers. Many finished samples for viewing will be available. There will be homework to complete in the evening between class days. Cost: $450
